British Cleaning Brands in the USA

The British cleaning cupboard is an unusually confusing thing to replace abroad, because some of it exists in America under different names, some of it does not exist there at all, and some of it is built around a plumbing problem American homes handle differently. This guide sorts out which is which.

Flash is Mr. Clean

Procter & Gamble sells one cleaning brand under different names in different countries. In the United States and Canada it is Mr. Clean, with the familiar bald mascot. In the United Kingdom and Ireland it is Flash. In France it is Monsieur Propre, in Germany Meister Proper.

Sharing a corporate parent does not mean sharing a formulation, though. The Flash range in the UK and the Mr. Clean range in the US have developed separately, with different product formats and different fragrances. Something in one range frequently has no counterpart in the other, so a British shopper looking for a specific Flash product is not simply looking for a different label.

Cif was Jif, and is not sold in America

British households over a certain age still call it Jif. Unilever sold the cream cleaner under that name in the UK for decades, then renamed it Cif in 2001 to harmonise the brand across European markets, where it was already Cif or Vim.

For an American reader there is an extra layer: in the United States, Jif is peanut butter, and has nothing to do with any of this.

Unlike Flash, Cif has no American alias. Unilever does not sell the range in mainstream US retail, so this is a straightforward absence rather than a name change.

The dishwasher salt problem

This is the part Americans rarely know about, and it explains a lot of British packaging.

Much of the United Kingdom, particularly the south and east, sits on chalk and limestone, and the water is hard. British dishwashers are built around that: almost all of them have a salt reservoir, and British households buy dishwasher salt as a separate product to keep the machine's water softener working.

Dishwasher salt is not a mainstream American product, and American machines generally do not have that reservoir. That is why "all in one" appears so prominently on British tablets like Fairy Platinum Plus: the salt function is built into the tablet to handle hardness.

They work perfectly well in an American machine. If your local water is soft, part of what you are paying for is redundant, though it does no harm. In a hard water area, which describes a great deal of the United States too, a hard-water-formulated tablet is a reasonable thing to try against cloudy glassware.

What is worth importing, honestly

Cleaning products are heavy liquids, and shipping is charged by weight. That makes this the category where you should think hardest about whether you actually need the British version.

Import it when the specific product has no equivalent, as with Cif, or when a formulation or fragrance genuinely matters to you. Do not import a general-purpose surface spray that a local shop sells a perfectly good version of. The exception is anyone who has moved recently and simply wants their house to smell the way it used to, which is a real reason even if it is not a functional one.
