How Shipping British Groceries to the USA Actually Works

Importing groceries has an economics to it, and understanding it will save you money. This guide covers how the duties work, what the free-shipping threshold actually does to an order, and which categories are worth the weight and which are not.

Delivered Duty Paid, explained

All orders ship Delivered Duty Paid, usually written DDP. It means every import duty and tax is included in the price you see, and nothing is collected from you on delivery. We handle customs clearance and the import process.

This matters because the alternative is genuinely unpleasant. On a Delivered Duty Unpaid shipment, the courier pays the duty on your behalf and then bills you, often with a handling fee attached, and the parcel can be held until you settle it. People who have been caught by that once tend to check for DDP before ordering anything internationally again.

The practical upshot: the price on the product page is the price. There is no second bill.

The $99 threshold shapes everything

Shipping is a flat $29.99 on orders under $99, and free above it. That single fact determines how almost everyone orders.

Consider a $9 jar of Marmite. Shipped alone it costs $39. Add $90 of other groceries and the whole order ships free, which means the additional groceries effectively cost you $60 rather than $90 relative to shipping the jar by itself.

That is why the advice on every product page is the same: build a proper cupboard run rather than buying one thing. It is not an upsell so much as arithmetic. Ordering little and often from another continent is the expensive way to do it.

What ships well

Concentrates. The best value in the shop. Squash is diluted around one to nine, so a 2 litre bottle makes roughly 20 litres of drink. You are shipping syrup, not water.

Dry goods. Gravy granules, tea and cereal are light or bulky rather than heavy, shelf-stable, and last months. Tea in particular: a 160-bag box costs almost the same to ship as a 40-bag box.

Small, dense, long-lived things. Golden syrup, mustard, spreads. Compact, stable, and impossible to replace properly locally.

What ships badly, honestly

Tins. Heavy and largely water. A single tin of beans is not a rational international purchase. The multipack at least takes a large bite out of the threshold in one item.

Bottled drinks. Ready-to-drink bottles are mostly water. Buy them when no concentrate exists and no American product is equivalent, not to stock up.

Liquid detergent. Dense and heavy. If you are importing it at all, buy the largest bottle, because 101 washes and 43 washes cost the same per kilo to move.

The one thing that can go wrong

Chocolate and heat. We do not ship chocolate with temperature-controlled packaging. We tested insulated packing and ice packs, and found the ice packs caused condensation that damaged both the chocolate and the rest of the parcel.

By placing an order that includes chocolate you accept the risk of melting in transit, and we cannot refund or replace items affected by warm weather. If you are ordering to a hot state in summer, weigh that. Fat bloom, the pale film on chocolate that has warmed and re-set, is harmless and cosmetic; a melted bar is not.

Timing

Orders are processed and dispatched within 1–2 business days, Monday to Friday. Estimated delivery is 1–3 business days from dispatch. Those are estimates and can move with customs processing, carrier delays or peak periods, so order Christmas things in November rather than December.

Once dispatched you get a shipping confirmation with tracking. Check your address carefully at checkout, because a parcel returned for a bad address costs more to resend.
