British Toiletries in the USA: Same Brand, Different Name
Share
Replacing a British bathroom cabinet in America is harder than it looks, because most of the brands are there under different names, and the products behind those names are not the same. This guide covers what maps to what, and where importing is genuinely the only option.
Lynx is Axe
Same Unilever brand, two names. The line launched in France as Axe, and that is the name used across most of the world including the United States. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, along with Australia and New Zealand, it is sold as Lynx, because the Axe name was not available in those markets.
What that does not mean is that the ranges are identical. Fragrances, formats and product names differ between markets, and variants come and go on different schedules. A British shopper hunting for a specific Lynx fragrance in an American store will usually find that the nearest Axe product is a different scent with a different name.
That is the whole case for importing. If you want a men's body wash, buy one locally. If you want Ice Chill specifically because it is the one you know, there is no reliable American equivalent.
Sure is Degree is Rexona
The same pattern, with three names. Sure in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Degree in the United States and Canada, Rexona across much of Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia. The packaging design is often visibly related, which is the giveaway once you know to look.
As with Lynx, shared parentage does not mean matching products. Formats, fragrances and formulations are developed per market, so a specific Sure product frequently has no exact Degree counterpart.
Deodorant is one of the products people are most specific about, because you smell it on yourself all day. That, plus skin tolerance for a formulation that suits you, is why it is imported more often than its price would suggest.
Radox has no American alias at all
Radox is the clean case. It is a British bathroom brand whose founders, from as early as 1908, built products around blends of minerals and herbs. It began with bath salts and the mineral therapy idea has stayed central ever since.
Unlike Lynx and Sure, it is not sold in America under any name. There is nothing to compare it against locally and no risk of buying the wrong version by mistake. If you want Radox, importing is the only route, which makes it one of the purer import cases in the bathroom cabinet.
The 3 in 1 format
Combined body wash, shampoo and face wash bottles take up a lot of shelf in the British men's grooming aisle. The format exists in America too, so this is not a missing category, but the Lynx version carries the British range's fragrances rather than the American ones.
Worth being straight about the format itself: a combined product is a compromise by design. A dedicated shampoo does more for hair, and a dedicated face wash is formulated for facial skin. For travel or for someone who genuinely does not want three bottles it is sensible; for particular hair or skin requirements, buy separates.
Buy the big bottles
Toiletries are heavy for their value, and body wash is mostly water. Shipping charges by weight regardless, so the 900ml bottle is far better value per dollar of shipping than the 250ml one.
The counter-argument is variety: if you want to try several fragrances, three 500ml bottles cost roughly the same to ship as one large one and give you more to work with. Either way, order toiletries together rather than one at a time.
Read the label
UK and US cosmetic ingredient labelling follows different conventions, so check the pack rather than assuming it matches a US product you have used. If you have sensitivities, that is worth doing properly. Cooling formulations in particular rely on sensory ingredients that can be strong on sensitive skin.
Everything is in Health & Beauty, with the men's range in Men's Toiletries and washes in Shower, Bath & Hand Hygiene.
