The hard water difference
This is the part Americans rarely know about. Much of the United Kingdom, particularly the south and east, sits on chalk and limestone, and the water is hard. British dishwashers are built around that: almost all of them have a salt reservoir, and British households buy dishwasher salt as a separate product to keep the machine's water softener working.
Dishwasher salt is not a mainstream American product, and American machines generally do not have that reservoir. The problem is managed differently, largely through detergent formulation and whole-house softeners where they exist.
"All in one" tablets exist in that context. The salt function built into the tablet is there to handle water hardness, which is why the phrase appears so prominently on British packaging and means less on an American shelf.
What that means for using them here
The tablets work perfectly well in an American machine. They are a standard tablet format and dissolve in the dispenser like any other. If your local water is soft, some of what you are paying for is redundant, though it does no harm.
Where they earn their place is in a hard water area, which describes a great deal of the United States too. If you have limescale on your glassware and cloudy results from domestic tablets, a hard-water-formulated tablet is a reasonable thing to try.
Why the 54 pack
Tablets are dense and heavy, so a single small pack is poor value once shipping is considered. At 54 tablets this covers roughly two months of daily use and takes a large step toward the free-shipping threshold in one item.
